Head of Unit, Joint Research Centre at the European Commission

Pilar Aguar holds degrees in Pharmacy (Universidad Complutense, Madrid) and Food Science and Technology (Universidad Central, Barcelona) with additional studies in Toxicology.  She also is recognised as “Specialised Pharmacist in pharmaceuticals and drug analysis” and “Specialised Pharmacist in pharmaceutical industry”.  She joined the European Commission in 2001. In the EC she has worked in different domains including the evaluation of the performance of national authorities and their food safety control systems, the management of the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks and the development and management of European Research programmes and policies, in the area of nanotechnology and advanced materials particularly in their health and environmental impact. Since 2012 she is Head of Unit in the Joint Research Centre, with responsibilities including medical devices and technologies, nanobiosciences, human exposure and consumer products safety.  Before 2001, she worked for the Spanish Ministry of Health.
